Organic farming with fixed routines and a milking system that works with you
Jakob Hansen – Romsdal, Jutland (DK)
Romsdal is an organic dairy farm in Jutland with 270 cows and 700 hectares. After more than twenty years of organic farming, the focus remains on cow comfort, clear routines and simple workflows. Two years ago, the farm replaced its traditional side by side parlour with six BouMatic Gemini Up MAX robots.
Our cows were used to being milked from behind. We wanted a system that stayed close to what they knew. BouMatic’s setup matched that requirement, helping ensure a smooth transition. Milk production remained stable.
Because cows walk long distances to pasture, continuous individual milking was not an option. Romsdal milks twice a day, finishing each session in about three hours. We bring all cows in at once and we’re done, individually and continuously.
The system reduced labour needs and manual effort. What previously required two people now needs only one, saving around ten labour hours daily. Physical strain has dropped significantly, making the work more sustainable.
HerdMetrix provides daily insights into conductivity, production and deviations. If a cow falls out of her rhythm, we see it immediately and can act.
Automation that serves tradition
Matteo Lasagna – Cremona, Lombardy (IT)
In the 1990s, the Lasagna Dairy Farm already used a BouMatic parallel parlour, but rising demands required further automation and improved performance while maintaining the two daily milkings for Parmigiano Reggiano production. With the support of BouMatic distributor Enne Effe, the farm implemented a Gemini Up MAX system consisting of four double boxes, providing a total of eight milking stations.
Matteo Lasagna states: "Our milk is destined for Parmigiano Reggiano, so process discipline is non negotiable. Gemini Up MAX enables us to respect the two-milkings-per-day rule while maintaining throughput."
Its standardized preparation—cleaning, stimulation and stripping—ensures stable let down and meets the strict PDO requirements for hygiene and traceability.
"Gemini Up MAX has reshaped our routine with an automated, steady rhythm," says Matteo Lasagna. Eight milking stations let us handle up to eighty cows per hour while preserving animal comfort with sorting gates and the Escorter 100 automatic cow pusher.
"With OneView and RealTime Activity we monitor each cow in real time. Decisions about reproduction, health and feeding are now based on precise data, which increases productivity and reduces downtime."
