Earth Day 2023: A Look at BouMatic’s Sustainability Efforts

Each year since 1970, Earth Day has been celebrated on April 22 as a way to bring attention to environmental issues and encourage action to protect our planet. There is also a unique theme every year. The theme for Earth Day 2023 is “Invest in Our Planet.”

At BouMatic, we are committed to investing in our planet and reducing our environmental footprint. We have found ways to reduce waste and reuse materials.

Let’s take a look at how BouMatic is doing its part to contribute to a sustainable future.

Finding a new use for scrap material

One of BouMatic’s major efforts to invest in our planet is a commitment to reduce waste. A great example of that is our efforts to repurpose scrap material.

At BouMatic, we produce millions of rubber milk liners through an injection molder. This molder creates scrap during the manufacturing process. Historically, we have discarded this scrap in a dumpster to be taken to a landfill.

Our Operations Supply Chain Team was determined to find a better solution. Thanks to this team, BouMatic now ships this scrap to a partner in the Midwest. They chop it up into small pieces and repurpose it for other applications, such as playground mulch and rubber for running tracks.

Refurbishing chemical totes and drums

BouMatic is also taking steps to reduce waste in our chemical manufacturing. We ship chemicals in 275-gallon plastic totes. Rather than discarding these containers after use, we have partnered with local BouMatic dealers to return the totes in full truckloads. We then have the totes cleaned and refurbished by a local laborer.

Our ultimate goal is to be 80% self-sufficient. Right now, we are 20% self-sufficient. We continue to work on increasing the number of dealers who are participating in this refurbishing process. The program has been running for six months and is going really well.

In addition to the totes, BouMatic is also looking to refurbish and recycle the 55-gallon plastic drums we use to ship chemicals. Once the tote program is finalized, we will invest in additional equipment needed to recycle the drums with the same process. This will occur in 2023.

At BouMatic, we continue to explore ways we can work towards a more sustainable future. We are committed to finding new and innovative ways to invest in our planet and protect our natural resources for generations to come.
