This June Dairy Month, we're shining a light on the dealers who show up for dairy farmers every single day, the people who know the farms, know the cows, and know what it means when something breaks at 2 a.m. From Wisconsin to Ontario, these four dealerships represent the backbone of the BouMatic network: family-owned, service-first, and deeply rooted in the communities they serve.
Bill Fesenmaier didn't just start a dairy supply business. He started it as a farmer. Founded in 2006 out of Baldwin, Wisconsin, Bill's Dairy Supply began with one man and one route truck. What made it different from day one was the perspective behind it.
"Before starting the business, Bill was a dairy farmer himself, and that experience still shapes the way we do business today. We understand how important dependable service, practical advice, and timely support are because we know what it is like to be on the farmer's side of things."
That farmer-first instinct fueled steady growth. In 2015, the team added their first service technician. In 2016, two more route trucks hit the road. Today, Bill's Dairy Supply has a team of 12: route sales, service technicians, equipment support, and office staff, with the next generation already involved. Bill's son Brian now works route sales alongside Kyle Rentmeester, while service dispatcher Jessica Miller keeps the operation running and service lead Danny Hanson heads a crew of six technicians.
On why BouMatic made sense:
"We have always respected BouMatic equipment and their philosophy behind milking cows. Their focus on cow comfort, gentle milking, and practical parlor performance lines up well with how we want to support our customers. As our equipment installation and service capabilities have grown, we felt BouMatic would give our customers a superior option for parlor systems, technology, and long-term support. It was a natural fit for Bills Dairy Supply and the dairy producers we serve."
The mission hasn't changed since day one: "take care of dairy farmers, build strong relationships, and provide dependable service they can count on."
Few dealerships can trace their story back over six decades, but Unverfehrt Farm Supply has been serving farmers in central Illinois since 1961. Founded by Gus Unverfehrt, the business started by selling Wayne Feeds and Jamesway equipment, expanding into milking equipment in 1968, grain bins and buildings in 1972, and then BouMatic in 1978.
"In 1978 we were approached to take on BouMatic and we looked at the company and equipment and realized that BouMatic was the top of the line."
In 1990, brothers Kevin and Larry bought the business from their father. Now, the third generation is stepping in to carry it forward. Today, Unverfehrt Farm Supply employs around 50 people and covers a 200-mile service area.
Kevin sums up the philosophy that has guided them across three generations with striking simplicity:
"Service comes before sales. The better the service, the more sales it brings in. If you cannot give good service then it's hard to get called back."
Community runs deep here too. "We are also very active in the community and church and that makes great communication with the community. If one of the local communities needs something we are one of the businesses that step up to help."
What started as a two-man operation out of a garage in 1980 has grown into one of the most comprehensive agricultural equipment operations in Ontario. Dortmans Bros Barn Equipment now operates five locations, employs over 75 team members, and carries more than 30 equipment lines serving dairy, hog, goat, beef, and poultry operations.
The BouMatic partnership was a natural outgrowth of the community the Dortmans family had built.
"There was a need in the Strathroy area for a milking equipment dealership. John Dortmans had a lot of family, friends, and customers that were dairy farmers and BouMatic was an easy choice."
Dortmans' mission is ambitious and customer-focused: "To support farmers with the highest-quality products, the most knowledgeable technicians, and unmatched customer service and after-sales support." Their services span customized layout plans, full equipment installation, robotics integration, milk-time analysis, CQM compliance support, large in-stock parts inventory, and 24/7 on-call service.
Their team brings the perspective that makes the difference.
"With a team rooted in farming backgrounds, you can count on people who understand your operation and your challenges. For over four decades, we've built our reputation on a simple belief: farmers deserve the best products, the best technicians, and the best service, every time."
Their slogan captures it well: "It's a Matter of Choice Where Every Sale is Backed by Service."
Founded in 1971 by brothers Cliff and Cal Abts, Abts Equipment has built more than 50 years of trust with dairy farmers in northeastern Wisconsin. In 1984, Cal's son Greg and his wife Debbie took the reins and grew the business into what it is today: more than 65 employees and a dealership now entering its third generation of family ownership as of 2025.
The relationship with BouMatic has mirrored that same long-term commitment:
"We recognized a need in the community for better products and solutions for farmers. That commitment is why we've continued our long-standing partnership with BouMatic, not only because of the quality of their products, but also because of the strong relationships we've built over the years. In the same way, we've built lasting relationships with our customers, and those trusted connections are what continue to keep customers coming back to our Abts family business generation after generation."
What sets Abts apart in the field is their route program.
"What truly sets us apart is the route program we offer to our customers. As a full-line customer, you receive ongoing route maintenance and on-farm support, helping ensure your operation continues to run smoothly and efficiently."
For Abts, the local farming community is personal.
"We take pride in being part of a local farming community where people know and support one another. It's a close-knit group united by a common goal, helping each other succeed, strengthening local businesses, and supporting and educating the community for future generations."
From Baldwin to Strathroy, from Centralia to New Franken, these dealerships share something that no equipment catalog can capture: a genuine commitment to the farmers they serve. We're proud to have them in the BouMatic family. Happy June Dairy Month.
